AVAA: Active Velocity Acoustic Absorber

The AVAA C20 works by using an internal microphone to detect high acoustic pressures. The internal driver then works to reduce the acoustic pressure, behind a micro-perforated membrane, to almost zero. As a result, when sound waves pass through the membrane the energy is immediately reduced and or removed all together, with the remaining sound being absorbed by the movement of the drivers diaphragm. Operating from 15 Hz to 150 Hz, the AVAA takes the boom out of rooms, with ease.

Depending on the size of the room between 2 and 8 AVAAs are necessary. For small rooms a minimum of two AVAAs is recommended to have a symmetrical effect. For most normal size rooms (between 20 and 80 m2) it is recommended to use 4 AVAAs and for larger rooms the number can be increased to 6 or 8.

Their complete analogue design enables them to function like any other acoustical element in your room and can be turned on and off via a simple switch. The PSI AVAA C20 is effective in a wide range of spaces, including control rooms, live rooms, listening rooms and any rooms with low-frequency problems. It works independently from any sound source without altering it and doesn’t emit any sound, making it perfect for use in critical listening and recording environments.

The AVAA will have the same effect, on frequencies from 15 to 150 Hz, as opening a window about 5 to 10 times the size of the AVAA. This will impact sound in the time, frequency and space dimensions.

Frequency: with more precise and tighter bass, the masking effect of higher frequencies is reduced. Details in higher frequencies also become clearer.
Time: it will significantly reduce reverberation time in these frequencies especially on room modes.
Space: with less indirect sound in the room, the location of the sound is more accurate making the sound image more precise.

The PSI AVAA C20 offers the same low-end absorption as a bass trap more than ten times its size.

Without AVAAs

With no AVAAs present in the room: measurement has been taken in a 20m2 recording studio, equipped with two large loudspeakers, with an obvious room issue occurring at 32 Hz.

With AVAAs

Having added two AVAAs into the room: a better balance is achieved in general, better stereo imaging in the low end and a 300ms reduction is put in place at 32 Hz to combat the aforementioned issue
